Abstract

On the current stage of human development the city is the main form of population settlement and a “motor” of civilization. On the same time there is still no universally accepted definition of the “city”, which is still a topical scientific issue, particularly for the representatives of human geography. The article deals with the evolution of the definition “city” at different stages of human civilization. Particular attention is paid to the definition of a city in the system of relations “man” – “territory” by the representatives of native and foreign science. We consider evolutionary relationship and dichotomy of the categories “village” – “the city.” The interpretation of the concept of “city” as “unity unlike” based on the concept of territorial communities in the city is analyzed. The peculiarities of urban development in terms of accommodation there different types of local communities are represented in the article.
